MTI Earns Powerboat’s 2010 Readers Choice Award

Ventura, Calif., (July 27, 2010)-The readers of Powerboat have spoken. With 20 categories up for grabs, the magazine’s dedicated group of performance-boat enthusiasts voted loud and clear in Powerboat’s 2010 Readers Choice Awards.

From overall winners to honorable mentions, 60 different awards were handed out for the inaugural Readers Choice Awards in the September 2010 issue.

In the competitive “Favorite Catamaran Manufacturer” category, Marine Technology Inc. took home the top honors. Here is what the editors of Powerboat had to say about the Missouri-based boat builder:

The reduced size of the fleet at the 2009 Miami Boat Show Poker Run to Islamorada certainly didn’t appear to dampen anyone’s spirits. Although most of the participants fell under the category of “repeat business,” the event attracted a few first-timers, including Derrick Wachob, whose new MTI 44′ catamaran earned the club’s “Best Catamaran of the Run” award.  Poker Runs and The Economy

Kiekhaefer Award 2005

Miami Beach, Fla. (Feb. 18, 2005)-For over two decades, E.C. Kiekhaefer personified offshore racing innovation. Shortly after Mr. Kiekhaefer passed away, October 5, 1983, the E.C. Kiekhaefer Memorial Award was created in his name to honor offshore racing innovation in his style. The Kiekhaefer award is presented for technical innovation which advances the marine engineering art, improves offshore racing and is proven in the most recently concluded racing season.
For 2004, Fred Kiekhaefer (son of E.C.), presented the E.C. Kiekhaefer memorial Award to Marine Technology, Inc. of Wentzville, Missouri. Randy Scism, Marine Technology’ s president, accepted the honor. The M TI Racing Catamaran. Marine Technology, Inc. (MTI), delivered impressive performance in 2004. MTI catamarans finished 1-2-3 in the Key West Offshore Racing World Championships in Superboat Cat/OSS Cat class. Todd Werner’ s, “ Pro Marine,” with dry-sumped Mercury Racing Six drives, was 1st, with “ Team Virgin” and “ Nichols Offshore” in 2nd and 3rd,
respectively. Another MTI cat, “ CMS Mechanical “ Castaway” driven by Bob Bull and Mitch Miller, set an American Power Boat Association/Union Internationale Motonautique World Kilo Speed Record in Super Cat Light class. CMS averaged 126.03 mph with Mercury Racing 525
engines. Scism and Marine Technology have earned the coveted C.C. Kiekhaefer memorial Award for their exceptional creativity in the world of offshore.

Memorial Sculpture. Randy Scism received the award in conjunction with the 2005 Miami International Boat Show. Fred Kiekhaefer presented an original sculpture by Milwaukee artist, Tom Queoff, The bronze and stainless steel artwork is a stylized depiction of a racing gearcase cresting an ocean swell. The sculpture passes each year it is earned, to another honored innovator.

Limited Edition Print. As a permanent award, Marine Technology received a limited edition print (#9) of a George Bartell painting. The print is signed and numbered by the artist and   only given to recipients of the E.C. Kiekhaefer memorial Award.

Prior Recipients. The award originated in 1983, but was withheld for lack of qualified recipients in years 1987, 1991 through 1995, and 1997 through 2003. The 1996 award was presented to Pat Weismann for dry-sumping the Mercury Racing Six drive. The 1990 award was presented to Mike Peters for his C.U.V. boat design. In 1989, Tom Gentry was honored for the Gentry Turbo Eagle, an eight-cylinder, twin-turbocharged engine. In 1988, Seatek diesel captured the prize. The 1986 award went to Douglas Marine for the success of the 24 Skater catamaran. In 1985, Lamborghini received the award for their twelve-cylinder race engine. In 1984, Mercury Marine was honored for the MerCruiser IV surface drive. In 1983, the first award went to Cougar marine for advances in racing hull design.
